Description

WHAT: DC Department of Human Services (DHS), DC Public Schools (DCPS), and the Student Support Center (SSC) invite you to a Summit highlighting the New Heights program and celebrating the achievements of New Heights students, including those who are graduating or have graduated. .

The New Heights program is a school-based initiative that engages expectant and parenting students in 15 DC high schools (13 DCPS and two DC Public Charter Schools), including targeting those living in foster care. The program seeks to improve the attendance and graduation rates of these students, prepare them for college or careers, and prevent subsequent pregnancies.

WHEN: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2014 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

  • 8:30 AM Registration and continental breakfast

  • 9:00 AM Speakers and New Heights student panel

  • 10:30 AM Workshop sessions (10:30-11:30 and 11:45-12:45)

  • 1:00 PM Lunch, student presentation, networking

  • Parking: Visitors may park for free in the garage located under the school off Hiatt Place NW. However, the number of spaces is limited so admission will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Metro: Yellow Line-Columbia Heights Metro Station is only a few blocks from CHEC.

WORKSHOPS: (Each session will be offered twice.)

  1. Understanding the Youth Culture (Maranda C. Ward, Promising Futures) Gain useful ideas about preparing interactive workshops and presentations geared to today’s youth culture.
  2. Growing, Learning, Playing: Your Child's Development (DCPS Early Stages Team) Learn tips and ideas about the physical, social and emotional development of children ages 0 to 5 years,
  3. Healthy Cooking (Elizabeth Johnson, Whole Foods) Participate in a demonstration on healthy eating for children and their parents plus gain some useful ideas about smart shopping using WIC coupons.
  4. Family Literacy (Micki Freeny, DC Public Libraries) Learn and practice the “art” of reading with your child.
  5. Parenting in Action – (Sylvia Zwi, Sitar Arts Center) Experience positive parenting through music, dance and storytelling.
  6. Child Safety (Jenna-Lyn Ryckebusch, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) Discuss the possible risks to children and learn about the free programs and campaigns developed by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to help you address them.
  7. Build-A-Dad Workshop: “Customizing the Ideal Dad in You (Mustafaa Madyun, AYD Practice, LLC) Learn about the power of language and words to create experiences and understand how to intentionally use that power to foster positive relationships with their children and co parents.
  8. New Heights at Next Step Public Charter School Documentary (Brandon Kramer, Meridian Hill Pictures and Megan Moore, New Heights Coordinator) View the new video about New Heights and ask questions of the film-makers and participants.
